Bayou-Diversity (3 January 2021) Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, just so long as the beholder is another brown pelican. Officially designated Louisiana's state bird in 1966, the species in a splash of irony vanished from within our borders the same year due to pesticide poisoning. Since recovering from that calamity after DDT was banned in the U.S., brown pelicans now keep a watchful eye on another existential threat – vanishing coastal wetlands
