Bayou-Diversity (21 February 2021) This 3/4" white oak acorn has the potential to develop into a living organism that will exceed 100 feet in height, 100,000 lbs. in weight, and 400 years in lifespan. Until just a few years ago white oak was a keystone species in the canopy of Louisiana hill country forests. As a nurturer of wildlife, it has few equals. Today it no longer grows on hundreds of thousands of acres, having been replaced by genetically modified pine trees planted in rows and harvested in less than 20 years. The loss speaks of our priorities as an otherwise intelligent species.
